RAGS v Walton Heath GC on Sat 27 May 2017 at Walton Heath
Peter Tomlinson (match manager)
Result: RAGS 6 ½ – 5 ½ Walton Heath
The RAGS match against Walton Heath, now in its 45th year, is always a special occasion and last year the club was also kind enough to host the golfing celebration of the Gunner tercentenary. The match takes place on the Saturday of the May Bank Holiday two days before Walton Heath hosts a US Open qualifier. So the course is always in magnificent condition with the greens running fast and true. This long running match is also particularly notable for the friendships that has built over the years and the warmth with which we are greeted by the Walton Heath members. This year was no exception.
It hasn’t proved easy over the year to win at Walton Heath, but this year’s side pulled off a notable, if close, victory. RAGS did well in the morning winning comfortably 4-2. As seems frequently to be the case, there was something of a fade away post lunch, but a hard fought half by Colin Welbourne and Paul Moyse ensured that the afternoon score was held to 3 ½ – 4 ½, giving us a win overall by 6 ½ – 5 ½.”
Provisional date for next year is Sat 26 May 18.
