Result: RAGS 5 – 3 Circuit Judges
The RAGS match against Circuit Judges started in the mid ’90s with some from each side having played in every fixture. It has been characterised over the years by convivial spirit and keen competition on an excellent course. 2017 was no exception and match was played in the highest temperatures recorded in the South East in the year to date. The New Zealand may not be the longest course and the heather may not be as high as the local vegetation at the US Open that was in progress concurrently in Wisconsin, but once a ball nestled therein, extraction was just as problematic – as many players discovered. To paraphrase fire discipline – ‘add one (at least) to all scores’.
RAGS reached lunch with a 3-1 lead and addressed the excellent menu with customary vigour. Such an approach has in the past led to less effective golf in the second round and indeed the Judges staged a comeback in the afternoon. However, Mike Tennant (who established the fixture for the RAGS) and Iain Campbell secured the win that saw RAGS home.
The match managers are investigating the options for delaying next year’s match to the following week, i.e. to Sat 23 Jun 18. Confirmation will follow ASP.
